Where is High Quadra and who lives there?

High Quadrais in the municipality of Saanich. It is bordered by: the Pat Bay Highway on the west, on the north and east by Quadra Street and on the south by McKenzie Avenue.

More than 40% of the area’s residents are university educated. The median age is slightly less than 50 years. Average annual household income is close to $80,000 and English is by far the first language. Some two-thirds of all homes here are occupant-owned. Approximately 45% of all households have children living at home, and of these, more than 60% are less than 20 years of age.

This neighbourhood and street of the same name honoura Spanish naval officer, Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra (22 May 1743 – 26 March 1794). Born in Peru, Quadra sailed with the Spanish Navy during the late 1700’s north from present-day Mexico as far as what is now Alaska and along the way explored much of coastal B.C.

How do residents spend their leisure time?

In terms of outdoor spaces, High Quadra is best known for Christmas Hill Park with almost 2 hectares of green space. Its walking trails provide wonderful views over the city and,thanks to a pedestrian bridge passing south over McKenzie Avenue, offer a direct connection to the excellent Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary.

But as they say, there’s more! Among the other facilities within High Quadra is Hutchinson Park. Named after author Bruce Hutchinson, this almost one hectare plot is adjacent to the Hutchinson homestead and offers green space and walking trails within a Gary Oak forest. As well, there are two playgrounds within this neighbourhood: Rogers Park and Bernard Park. Rogers Park is a secret gem hidden from street view and only accessible by footpaths from Chesterlea Road or Genevieve Road. Most people don’t even know it’s there.

In the neighbouring Lake Hill district to the east there are several local parks offering still moreoutdoor recreation options. Beckwith Park has great facilities for soccer and baseball. Lakehill and Prospect Lake soccer associations play their homes games here. A playground for smaller children, a basketball mini court, tennis courts, picnic tables and the “Frog Pond”, a water park that is very popular in the summer months – these are all to be found at Beckwith. The other Lake Hill park is Ambassador Park with its 5 baseball diamonds and a children’s playground.

While there is no indoor recreational facility, the Commonwealth Rec Centre is a short distance away by car or bus.

What about shopping?

At the south end of High Quadra is the Saanich Centre with some 25 shops and services. Nearby there are also some stand-alone retailers (e.g. a bicycle shop, beauty salons, garden supply store) which are all well patronized by the residents and other customers in the vicinity.

A short drive away are: the Royal Oak Shopping Centre (some 25 stores and services), the Saanich Plaza(some 12 stores and services) and the recently constructed Uptown Mall (more than 80 stores and services).

And what about churches?

Within the neighbourhood itself are: Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Salvation Army Victoria Citadel. Close by are: the Victoria First Church of the Nazarene,St. Peter’s Anglican, and the Life of Victory Family Church.

Are there other areas to consider?

Home buyers considering a purchase of a home in High Quadra will often also look at properties in the Lake Hill, Swan Lake and Maplewood areas.
