Where is Gonzales?

Of Oak Bay’s six neighbourhoods, Gonzales is the smallest. It is bordered by: Oak Bay Avenue to the north, to the west by Foul Bay Road and Gonzales Bay, to the south by Harling Point, and to the east by the shores of McNeill Bay.

Who lives in the neighbourhood?

Gonzales residents are a very well educated diversified group. Almost 70% are university educated and the median age is 55 years. Depending on the census catchment area, average annual income is about $130,000, yet this area has some of the most expensive homes in all of Canada. English is by far the first language and more than 90% of all homes here are occupant-owned. About half of all households have children living at home, and nearly 70% of them are less than 20 years of age.

How do Gonzales residents spend their leisure time?

Three small neighbourhood parks are convenient for residents: Trafalgar, Walbron and Gonzales Hill Regional Park.

Some three kilometres north of the Gonzales neighbourhood is the Oak Bay Recreational Centre. Here there is a large multi-faceted complex where visitors can enjoy swimming, skating, hockey, tennis and drop-in soccer.

A short distance east of Gonzales is the Victoria Golf Club. With its first 11 holes located on the ocean, the Victoria Golf Club has often been called “the Pebble Beach of the north”. This club often has a waiting list for prospective new members.

A little further along Beach Drive is the Oak Bay Marina which offers moorage for power and sail boats ad includes the well respected Marina Restaurant with its excellent vistas and cuisine.

Is there shopping close by?

Ample retail facilities can be found at Fairfield Village, the shops at Fort and Foul Bay as well as those in Oak Bay village itself. All of these, however, are best accessed by car.

And what about churches?

Churches that are close by include: Fairfield United Church, St. Mathias Anglican Church, St. Jean Baptiste (French language parish), and the Saint Sophia (Russian) Orthodox Church.
