Victoria—the Region’s Oldest Community

Victoria is just one of 13 municipalities that make up Greater Victoria. It’s one of the oldest communities in British Columbia, dating back to  at least 1843 and the establishment of Fort Victoria above the Inner Harbour.

The city grew quickly during the 18th Century, and many historic buildings still survive. The mature neighborhoods of Victoria feature tree-lined boulevards, expansive parks and a blend of heritage homes and stunning contemporary architecture.

Victoria is acknowledged to have the best weather in Canada. Bordered on three sides by ocean, Victoria with its warmer temperatures gets almost no snow in winter.

In the summertime, cool ocean breezes keep temperatures low compared to the Lower Mainland.

Greater Victoria Schools

Victoria neighbourhoods and communities such as East Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, View Royal  and the City of Victoria itself are served by School District 61 (SD 61).

SD 61 refers to “school catchment areas” to help determine where children will attend school.

While catchment schools are defined by the residential  postal code (see the “school locator” below), students in Greater Victoria School District have the choice to attend either their catchment school or any other school within the district.
