Surrounded by the Sea, With a Rich Maritime History

Sidney got its start as a service centre and transportation hub for the farms of the Saanich Peninsula. Sidney still is a transportation hub. The Anacortes Ferry offers convenient access to Washington State, BC Ferries’ Swartz Bay Terminal is also close by, and, across the highway international flights depart from Victoria International Airport (YYJ).

Sidney’s rich marine history means there is a strong local sailing and boating culture. Many residents own a sailboat or a small boat with an outboard motor. Gulf Islands National Park lies to the north of the Saanich Peninsula. The sea around Sidney is paradise for kayakers and anyone who loves exploring by boat.

World-Class Recreation

In fact, the Panorama Recreation Centre helped North Saanich snag the title of Kraft Hockeyville 2015.  In Fall 2015 North Saanich will receive the opportunity to host an NHL pre-season game between Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks.

The Ardmore neighbourhood on the west side of the peninsula is close to the beach as well as two golf courses.

Just to the north, Deep Cove, with its school, fire hall, coffee shop and gas station acts as the “downtown” and heart of North Saanich.

Schools in Sidney

Sidney is part of Saanich School District. There is an elementary school located quite close to Beacon Avenue, as well as a middle school and high school, both north of the town centre.

The community of Deep Cove on the other side of Saanich Peninsula features a well-regarded French Immersion Program.

Close to Ferry Service and International Airports

Besides being quite close to the Victoria International Airport as well as BC Ferries and quick trips to Vancouver, Sidney is also home to the Anacortes ferry terminal, with daily service to Washington State.

Sidney is also served by Hwy 17 (the Pat Bay Highway), which leads south to downtown Victoria. It’s a thirty-minute drive into the city, down the Saanich Peninsula, and many people commute into work from Sidney.
